Colorado Field Hockey Association (COFHA)
Select Training Squads (U19 and U16) (COFHATS)

COFHA, the governing field hockey entity of CO is forming a select training squad for elite players in the state of CO. The main goals of the COFHATS are to advance field hockey play for all youth in the state of CO. Individual players will benefit by development of fundamental skills, provide growth for all high school teams, and elevate the level of play in CO through advanced skills. It also allows CO players who travel to national tournaments to compete in a comfortable yet competitive atmosphere because they are prepared at the individual and team levels.

Squads
There will be 2 squads of 25 players; U16 and U19. Selections for each squad will be November 1st from 10-11:30 am. Tentatively, COFHA has set a goal of 25 members per age group for a total of 50 players, however based on how many players tryout and commit, we reserve the option to have more (no greater than 40) or less (no less than 20).

Format for Practices
The format for the training squad is clinic based with some game situation play. Coaches from all over the state including former national team members will coach the squads to provide a diversity of knowledge and experience. Players will practice together within their age group (U16 or U19) and the focus of each session will be on both individual skills (including: ball movement, passing/receiving, hits, defensive jabs/block tackles) and team dynamics (including: offensive and defensive corners, long hit, 16yd hit plays, and offensive and defensive team strategy). There will be little conditioning as per specific runs or sprint training, however we expect the players to maintain physical conditioning for their own health and safety.

Selections
The COFHATS is a selective program. Tryouts will be Nov 1st . Players can get selected for the squad in 1 of 2 ways
1)Tryouts (best method)
a.Held Nov 1st 10-1130am at Kent or CA.
b.Coaches are the selectors (with over 7 coaches committing)
c.Coaches cannot vote for their own players but can provide nominations to guide selectors and provide input for clarity
d.Players will be wearing numbers during the tryouts
e.Our goal is to have at least 1 player from each age bracket from each school
f.Non-high school coach selectors are included to ensure inputs from other programs the athletes participate in (i.e. clubs, Futures, etc)
2)Nominations (absolute back up)
a. For players who cannot make the tryouts
b.Need coach’s recommendation plus
i.Recommendation of one other coach who is very familiar with the player
ii.Recommendation from a Future’s coach
iii.Proven history of level of play (i.e. All state team, MVP, varsity starter for 2 years)

Membership Requirements
1) Players will be required to attend at least one of the sessions a month (50% attendance)
2) Standard equipment (mouthguard, shinguard, stick, USFHA membership)

Tournaments

COFHA is planning participation in up to 4 national tournaments a year including but not limited to: Cal Cup, Festival, State Games of the West, and National Indoor Tourn. COFHA will provide a yearly calendar at the start of each year listing each tournament we are traveling information for each tournament, when and where, approximate costs, number of players/teams we are taking, whether college coaches will be attending, which COFHA coaches are attending and organizing travel, and important dates for payments and turning forms in. This will allow each player to decide which if any or all of the tournaments they would like to travel.
The COFHATS will provide excellent opportunities for players to prepare for these tournaments. It should be noted that COFHATS does not have any effect on a players selection to play on any of the teams traveling to a national tournament. Being or not being on a squad does not help or hurt a players chances to make a travel team.
